Three Questions Before Your Next Campaign

A campaign starts more clearly when leaders align on purpose, readiness, and the relationships that will carry the work.

  • Campaign planning
  • Fundraising readiness

A campaign can create momentum around an important mission. It can also expose unclear priorities, disconnected systems, and assumptions that have not yet been tested. Before setting a goal or announcing a timeline, leadership teams benefit from answering three foundational questions together.

Why does this campaign matter now?

A strong campaign case begins with urgency that people can understand. The answer should connect the organization’s mission to a specific opportunity, need, or next chapter. It should explain what becomes possible when donors participate and what remains out of reach without their support.

A list of projects is not yet a case for support. The case becomes compelling when each priority contributes to one coherent vision of change.

Are the organization and its leaders ready?

Campaign readiness involves more than identifying prospective donors. Consider whether the organization has:

  • Leaders who can describe the vision consistently
  • Reliable donor and relationship information
  • Staff capacity for timely follow-up and stewardship
  • A realistic understanding of its current donor community
  • Agreement about how campaign decisions will be made

Readiness does not require perfection. It requires shared expectations and an honest plan for closing the most important gaps.

Which relationships will carry the campaign?

Campaigns move through trust. The earliest conversations should involve people who already care deeply about the mission and can help shape the case, test the goal, and open doors to others.

A campaign is not only a path to a financial goal. It is an opportunity to deepen the community around the mission.

When purpose, readiness, and relationships reinforce one another, a campaign can do more than fund a set of priorities. It can strengthen the organization for the work that follows.
